The SeaCleaners NGO, created by Yvan Bourgnon in 2016, has set itself the goal of reducing plastic pollution and preserving the oceans. The association's actions include the collection of macro plastic waste at sea, awareness raising and education in France and internationally, the development of technologies and circular economy loops, scientific studies and data sharing on this pollution.

Manta Innovation, the technical department of The SeaCleaners, is responsible for the design and construction of the Manta, the association's ambassador ship.

This 50m long boat, which collects and treats floating plastic macro-waste, is equipped with a hybrid electric-vehicle propulsion system to minimise its carbon footprint. To this end, major efforts are being made to optimise the boat's energy system and its electric propulsion.

LOCATION : La Trinité Sur Mer

CONTRACT : Internship

EXPERIENCE : Experience in object-oriented language : C++, Java or Python

START DATE: 01 January 2023

Subject of the internship

Manta Innovation has developed two digital tools to analyse the performance of the Manta:

A VPPP software (Velocity and Power Prediction Program), in Python, which allows the analysis of the Manta's propulsion performance in three navigation modes: engine only, sail only and engine + power assist.

A software package called SEGE (Système Embarqué de Gestion de l'Energie), developed under Matlab / Simulink, which is a digital model of the Manta's energy system, allowing the analysis of the Manta's energy performance according to its mission profiles and to support the sizing of the electrical and thermal systems.

The work planned for the internship is as follows:

VPPP: An evolution of the software functionalities is planned to take into account the drift and static equilibrium of the boat under the effect of the velocity propulsion. The corresponding extension will be carried out using hydrodynamic and aerodynamic data from fluid mechanics calculations (CFD) provided by an external service provider. The study of the ship's equilibrium may give rise to additional CFD calculations on the ship's appendages, in particular to test different daggerboard positions. Other developments will be made to the software:

The integration of the use of the hydro-generator in sailing propulsion (taking into account its drag data)

Small improvements in the usability of the software (batch processing, compiled version, comments in the input data files)

SEGE: The results of the VPPP calculations, in terms of wind power, will be integrated into the SEGE software to enable the precise quantification of the contribution of wind propulsion - under sail alone or with engine assistance - to the ship's overall energy balance.

The internship will be supervised by the Energy Project Manager, who specified the SEGE and VPPP software and was heavily involved in their development.

The SeaCleaners, an NGO created by Yvan Bourgnon in 2016, aims to reduce plastic pollution and preserve the oceans. The association's actions include the collection of macro plastic waste at sea, awareness raising and education in France and internationally, the development of technologies and circular economy loops, scientific studies and data sharing on this pollution.

Manta Innovation, which is the technical arm of The SeaCleaners, is responsible for the development, manufacture and supply of solutions for the clean-up of aquatic pollution and the recovery of plastic waste, including the development of a floating plastic waste collection boat, the Manta, which is the association's ambassador boat.

The Manta is a 50m ship, one of whose main missions will be to collect and treat floating plastic macro-waste slicks. To do this, the boat will be equipped with collection mats and floating surface collection nets. These collection systems are at the heart of the Manta's operation, so major efforts are being made to optimise them.

Subject of the internship "Manufacture and testing of prototypes of MANTA collection systems (net, mat)".

Manta Innovation and its partners have developed floating waste collection systems to be installed on the MANTA (collection mats, surface nets).

After the development phases, the validation of these systems was carried out either through simulations and stress calculations (mats), or through tests with small (mats & nets) or full-size (nets) prototypes.

The year 2023 will be devoted to the manufacture and experimental validation of the prototypes of the final versions of the mats and nets as they will be installed on the Manta (reduced or full size depending on the experimental possibilities).

The internship consists of carrying out the work of :

  1. Support for technical and logistical coordination with partners.
  2. Integration of the results of the studies and tests carried out in the design of the prototypes of the final versions of the mats and nets.
  3. Follow-up of the manufacture of the carpet and net prototypes.
  4. Support for the organisation of validation tests and participation in the tests.
  5. Analysis of test results.

The internship will be supervised by the project manager of the collection systems who was involved in the previous development and experimental validation phases of the mats and nets.

Profile required

You are a student of an Engineering School, with a teaching or a speciality in mechanical or maritime engineering.

You have a real appetite for operations, field activities and DIY, good interpersonal skills and you have already been able to make your mark in the field of product/process validation.

You are passionate about the sea and the preservation of the environment.

Come and bring your talents and motivation to a project such as Manta.

A good command of English and a boat licence are a plus.

Conditions of the internship

Internship in 2023 for a period of 4 to 6 months, preferably between 1 February and 31 July 2023.

Location of the internship: in the premises of Manta Innovation, 10 rue de la Drisse, 56470 La Trinité-sur-Mer.
